Behavior Modification Exercise

So on a typical day I work out for about and hour and a half, eat pretty well and get a decent amount of sleep. However I don't exactly hydrate myself how I should. I typically drink any where from 44-80 ounces of soda a day. I know right, not too healthy. So for this week I decided to try to cut out soda. For each day I was able to go without drinking a soda, I would put 5 dollars towards a new video game and everyday I drank a soda I would remove 5 dollars.

My Week/ Exercise

Day 1

Alright so day one was a normal day I went to class and then my typical 11am workout. Afterwards I was pretty parched so I ran over to the pod and got myself a soda. Obviously I failed here, I forgot about the experiment but as soon as I took a few sips I realized what I had done and threw it away. The rest of the day went pretty smooth and I made sure there were no more slip ups. So I wasn't perfect for the day but seeing that I showed restraint and threw it away, I called it a draw.

REWARD-0

Day 2

Day 2 was full of temptation. After classes I went to Sonic, multiple convenient stores and I even had work. Work was probably the biggest temptation for the day because we have a soda dispenser that I can use at any time I want. I got myself raspberry sweet tea instead. So staying away from soda especially DR.P (my favorite) was defiantly a plus but I'm not sure if I should reward myself replacing it with another sweet drink. But hey it wasn't soda.

REWARD- $5 towards a new game

Day 3

So day 3 I actually did really did good. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all I had was water, water and water. I was actually really proud of myself I almost actually doubled my reward for the day. The day was good, class was good, overall great day. I already feel like its becoming easier to stay away from the temptation.

REWARD $5

Day 4

Day 4 I had a bit of a struggle again, I had work and had that temptation again. I choose another sugary but a healthier option and just got myself a cup of chocolate milk. It was actually really good, I'm not sure why I don't drink chocolate milk more often.  I am actually contempating about rewarding myself with a soda tomorrow if I can go without for a few more days.

REWARD $5

Day 5

Alright so the last and final day. It has been a major struggle the last few days but I am so close. Haha I can almost taste my next soda. Haha its almost seemed like a drug that I'm trying to get off of. I am actually doing really good just about 5 days without soda. I was scheduled for work again but I got lucky and dodged work. Haha kidding they didn't need me but I did great and stayed away from soda all day again.  The urge was still there all day but I am getting better. I am actually planning on continuing to try stay away from soda but I will reward myself from time to time.

REWARD- $5 and finally a Dr. Pepper

So the first day when I began to start this experiment I believe I drank two route 44 sodas and over the course of the five days that I documented if I drank soda or not I actually only drank maybe half of a soda.  Obviously the experience only lasted a few days so my rewards didn't stack up to a whole video game which was my goal but I did great.  I feel like rewarding myself actually helped me get towards my goal but I can't continue to just give myself $5 for everyday but I would like to reward myself in some way.

  1. Hey Austin! You did a great job on this blog. I liked how you had positive reinforcement when you reached your goal for the day but also had negative reinforcement when you failed. I myself need to learn to drink more water lol. Keep up the good work.
