Sensation and Perception

The Five Senses

1. Touch
2. Smell
3. Sight
4. Hearing
5. Taste

In every part of our lives we are using these five physical senses to perceive the world around us. From listening to music, to eating the most gourmet of meals we are constantly taking in the physical world around us.  We sense our environment and the information is sent to our brains where we interpret what has taken place. Each of our sense organs such as our nose or eyes receive a stimulus that is then taken in as a neural transmission to the brain producing an image, taste, feeling, etc.

Why do we perceive the way we do?

Why is the sky blue, why do skunks smell bad? It is all up to our senses and the way we are perceiving this information. A couple of years ago there was an mesmerizing picture of a dress in which no one could agree on its color. For instance last semester my fiancée was reading her psychology book and found a picture of the dress. We both looked at the same picture but saw two different things. For her it was white and gold, for me blue and black. Neither of us were technically wrong but that just goes to show how our individual visual senses can be perceived different ways. This debate was entirely based on biology, how our brains work and how we perceive the stimuli.
As we look at this photo, the light enters our eyes and our brain perceives these wavelengths to their corresponding colors; the light then hits the retina and signals are sent to the visual cortex where it is then turned into the image. As our brain receives this information it is supposed to get rid of the information it doesn't need and keeps the information it believes it should keep. But as you see, this process doesn't always work the same for everyone. Seeing as our brains are all different, they sometimes keep and or get rid of different information that other people pertain and perceive in their own way. So what do you see?

  1. Great blog. It was very informative. It showed real insight into the way in which perception worked. It flowed very smoothly, and was easy to follow. I love the way you describe the perception of humans, but I would of loved to read more about how the perceptions of certain people can be different especially in relation to the dress. Over all though great blog.

  2. I like how you used questions stating why is the sky blue or why skunks smell bad to convey our senses. To address the dress dilemma, I always have seen white and gold, but this is such a cool experiment to understand how everyone is different in seeing certain different shapes and colors and sizes. (btw, the article stated that the actual fabric used was blue not white, so our can be wrong/ misleading.) This was short and simple, and it got across the point as needed. Good job on this blog, and if anything, I would add more pictures and not use black colored font on a black background.
